a Thin Film _
A thin film_ is underlying our computational universe, realized by quantized bits of information that from our perspective is perceived as energy and matter.
the acceptance that nothing physically exists untill we observe its existance. is the core of this project
A thin film is a project of reasearch in the fields of new media art , computer generated imagery, and performance art.
A thin Film
overview
diferend 'ways' are giving equivelant descriptions of the same fundamental underlying reality.
the "what" depends on who's looking and from what perspective.
A thin Film is always there encoded in some cryptic way.
inner chambers '
(out door)
lead in installation / sculptural objects
black mirror film, acrylic paint,on metal
' inspired by the chambers inside the Great Pyramid '
and the fact that abstract and concrete concepts,
are represented in different parts of the brain.
inner chambers explore the idea of a natural
or artificial enclosed space or cavity.
the inner chambers are a direct, or symbolic digital image practice,
aiming to reach new conclusions on the neurophysiology of vision,
and the esoteric mechanics of human sight.
outer surface / external view / inner chambers
black mirror film, on metal / sculptural objects.
the ( 3 ) sculptural objects representing the
'inner chambers', appear as black mirrors,
and will inevitably engage the viewer.
_ his own reflected image, will be the last sensory register from the outside world, that the spectator will take with him entering the installation space.

the physics '
in quantum physics 'superposition' is the ability of a quantum system to be in multiple states at the same time.
based on the Superposition principle, a system is deployed,
a system that has two different states that can define it,
and explores if it's possible for it to exist in both.
τhe expectation and the probability that the measurement of an observable part of the system will give a specific value, keeps the system in a superposition state, where all the expected versions coexist.
when an observer enters the system, the system crashes
into one ( 1 ) version.
__The state of superposition is destroyed.
the performance '
in the first part of the installation 'A thin film' inspired by the principle of Superposition * a system is developed, which has two different states that can define it, and extends to two different levels.
level a) called 'terrestrial Sun' plane
and level b) called 'Divine Water' plane
'performers' are called upon to give a multidimensional interpretation of the human condition, while at the same time ensuring a two-way emotional symmetry between the two levels.
_the projected geometry of bodies, the density within the movement, and the performers internal projection, are encouraged as means of expression.
when the system balances in both versions (superposition),
an area of a translucent brightness is revealed. ___
_ then the viewer becomes the 'observer' entering the system, and the system collapses into one ( 1 ) version.
- a personalized solution to this quantum paradox
that the viewer will take with him.
_an oracle to an involuntary personal request.

that lies in the promise of immortality, temptation,
and guilt.

the Harp
_
the costumes and wearable art for 'A thin Film',
are by Melissanthi Spei.
_
the 3 stages (planes) of the performance.
__ superposition 1 '
in the ' terrestrial sun plane '
pre - birth sight / pre - existence / Pre - formation
terrestrial sun plane system / operation.
the starting point of the path is the acceptance of ''visible light" as an entity capable of performing and conveying functions of life.
_ the plane is permeated by the question of how do we represent things that have no external physical reality?
the 'terrestrial sun' plane is powered by pulsed light from a
led video wall, wich functions as a color field generator.
we have strong evidence that 'encoded color' in the form of pulsating light can triger the esoteric vision of a root directory wich stores unprossesed pre-existence / Pre-formation mental assets.
superposition 2 '
in the ' divine water ' plane
water has no color
but the ocean is blue
divine water plane / system
the plane is powered by a sequence of 'blue color fields' and
'primary shape signals' from a led video wall installation.
randomness in the order in which images are displayed is provided by a software
which translates real-time data input, into bitmap files.
The random data is provided by a specialized internet based platform (university program that utilizes many years of research in the field of computers and statistics) and is extracted from natural sources such as atmospheric noise.
themes such as that of the 'inhabited depth', and the immobilized physical field, are staged.
the 'divine water' system is a poetic exit from the convention of linear time.

the Harp
in the harp pads plane
floor / main unit
9 music note pads hiden under the pojyerthene floor cover
' touch sensetive midi controlers '

modular synthesizers and hardware connected to ' the Harp '
musical notes assigned to pads
9 pads are hidden under the floor covering
operating
with 'touch sensitive midi controllers',
with one (1) musical note assigned to each pad.
the midi controllers are connected to 'modular type' digital synthesizers, that
are activated by the movement of the performers.
the notes produced are:
C D E F F # G A B C
a lower tetrachord (C D E F) a tritone (F #) and the upper tetrachord (G A B C)
tone (1) _ tone (1) _ tone (1) _ semitone (1/2)
a perfect 4th (p4) symmetric progression.

plant life interactive installation _
in the intervening time between the performances described above, a sound system is activated.
_ groups of plants are developed around the main facility, connected with the help of a touch sensitive technology, with a sound production worckstation, as parts of a musical ensemble.
the natural movement of the plants (from the air) or the artificial (ventilation) or from the touch (natural interaction) of the active spectators, translates into midi information and triger the synthesizer sound modules.
a unique soundscape is created.

_
the 'cube' event in the installation timeline _
A thin Film is technicaly based on the use of light as a medium that holds the information, and the performative events where the human bodies project the conceptual interpretation of that information.
when the light sources (from projectors and led walls) stop transmiting encoded or visual information, and the performers withdraw, the installation space turns into a time consuming, empty black cube of nothingness.
a cube as a symbol for the great infinite unknown.
_ a step in the process of an intellectual evolution, or entropy.
transitioning to the _ 'cube' /

short throw ceiling video projection.
_ sound
a deep bass repeated sound, with a rather big reverb effect,
echoes like if the room is larger than it's actual size,
something that adds to the spectator's disorientation.
the sound's velocity, volume, attack, and release, varies
and sometimes
it feels like the sound source is located
somewhere outside the room.
the given space can be perceived as an expanded field
of alternating physics, where proximity and distance
cease to be contradictory.
_
The black / dark blue monochrome / cube
the viewer is standing in the 'event horizon' experiencing
the emptiness and
vastness of the cube.
the straight line / eternal return _ outro
projected light in the form of a straight line
appears in the installation space
very bright, and without any movement.
the straight line is a concept of human intellect and it can not be found anywhere in the physical field.
it is represented in a part of the brain where abstract ideas are stored and processed.
_ human brain turns to the straight line for comfort and hope, away from the existential horror of the void.
